Shoo fly, don't bother me

Summer means flies. Yes even in Denmark, & they drive me CRAZY!!!
Now you might be thinking, " but you should be used to flies from Australia". Yes, but I am also used to having fly screens that keep them out of the house. Here they don't have fly screens & it's just too hot to keep all the doors & windows shut, so the house is FULL of them. They are everywhere, & it seems that just as soon as you've killed 50 of them, there's another 50.

  1. Why do they drive you so crazy? Apart from them landing on uncovered food and clean dishes, I find they pretty much keep out of the way - preferring to spend their time on the roof or walls. I must admit that they do drive me crazy when flying around the bedroom when I'm trying to sleep.

What is in your arsenal for killing them? We use fly traps outside the house (one near the kitchen windows, one near the back door - the places they seem to come in the most), strips of sticky fly paper in the kitchen and bathroom and the good old fly swat.

  2. Well our flies are a little more social. They also land on you & crawl on you while you are sitting. They also annoy us in the bedroom, flying around & on us. We have a nightly ritual each night before going to bed of shutting the door & then going round with the fly swat killing all the flies.

We've tried fly paper & insect zapper, but they didn't really seem to have much affect. So we just have about a dozen fly swats (one in each room & one for each of us in the loungeroom.

  3. The fly paper doesn't seem to make a huge difference in the numbers, but it does mean less to have to kill by hand with the fly swat. It is also satisfying to hear the noise of a fly that's been stuck trying to get free, but can't. And it also is a good visual thing to see the number of flies accumulate on the paper. It also has the advantage of not having to clean up the many dead fly bodies off the floors/benches that you have to do when killing them with a fly swat.
